For Real, Another Fire!?

You wouldn't believe where I am right now. I'm at home, sick with the stomach flu. I'm not really at home though. I'm at the public library because home is evacuated... Another fire in our building. So I'm at the library holding back my stomach contents, missing work, and evacuated from our building. There was a time when I could laugh about this sort of thing and I have three gut churning please-God-keep-that-dry-toast-down hours to try and remember those times. It is pretty ridiculous after all as it is the second fire-slash-evacuation since we moved in eight months ago. It does suck that I had to call my boss in to work for me. The poor thing has seven children and the last thing she wants to do is work my shift. I have a great history of not missing work but I'm a parent now and this is my fourth sick day since I started in September (Little One's sick days are also my sick days). Little One has such terrible anxiety from the last fire that I'm no...

Babies are so cute and snuggly. Toddlers are like little magical fairies that I love so much. Three year olds are my favorite. And four year olds? They're a fucking blast... She's 4.5 and her imagination is out of this world, she knows all the rules and laws (and enforces them consistently), she's maturing and enjoys time with her friends (but still wants mamma nearby), her sense of style and ability to match colours and patterns together is really starting to sort itself out (good gracious you should see some of the outfits she would put together when she was three) -- and she loves her family to death! She's laying in her boat while rowing it; I put out playdough and coloured popsicle sticks... Ice cream sundaes is what they come up with! Using every colour in the rainbow; her super-confident, out-going and funny personality.

Great Article

Little One is officially registered into Canada's state-of-the-art public education system. She will be starting full day Kindergarten (I'll touch on that one another time) in the fall. Click here for an article that talks about the importance of play in education.

I took her skiing this week. I have been dying to get her on the hill for years. Grammy bought her her a kid pass in the fall. I couldn't afford to get myself one but as luck would have it I am now employed at my favorite hill... It was a challenge finding her equipment on such a tight budget; I bit the bullet yesterday and bought her some used equipment from a local used sports store. She wasn't too thrilled by the lack of colour choice but the sales girl gave us a great idea to go buy stickers and decorate her skis. So we did. Later that day... Inside the staff hut, I set her up with her new gear and princess stickers she had picked from the Dollar Store. I chatted with the other instructors and got myself ready. When she was done personalizing her skis, I helped her put her boots on. She put her skis on by herself... and then skied over to the door, opened it, and went out the door. I guess she was ready to go. She loved being pulled around by my poles. We practised a snow...

She is having a great time in my friend's home daycare for the morning and I am sitting in the library whipping up some resumes. In September, she will be entering kindergarten and I will be getting a real job. Graphic design intern? Work in a print shop and learn the nitty-gritty of the printing process? Education Assistant with the school board? Work in that tasty hamburger joint up the street? What will I do to pay off my well deserved, monumental debts and save my now horrific credit rating that I have earned from being a stay-at-home, single mama for the past 3.5 years!?

Everything is a Song...

What a change there has been in her since she has been home full time ! Not just in her, but in both of us. We are so relaxed and barfy sweet to each other (most of the time!). Since she has been out of daycare, she just sings constantly. She sings about getting dressed, spreading peanut butter on her toast, taking the dog for a walk, me, Grammy, princesses, beautiful dresses, birthday parties... you get the picture. We'll just be hanging out in the house and I'll hear her sweet little voice soaring from the other room. Amazingly, she never gets tired or pasty mouthed...
